River God

Autur: Wilbur Smith
Genre: Historic Adventure
Score: 6/10

Synopses: The story was written by Taita the Egyptian slave. He starts his story as a slave for a princess named Lostris. Lostris is in love with Tanus, the General of the King's army. The king of course is not a big fan of Tanus and so the love is kept a secret by Taita as he arranges meetings between the two lovers.

After a festival, the Pharaoh fell in love with Lostris and took her as his wife. This is where all the fun begins as now Lostris is married and carrying Tanus' child. Taita has to use deception to make the people believe that this is the Pharaoh’s child and that the child is the heir to the throne of Egypt.

Taita receives a message from the gods telling them to go South and explore the unknown. But along the way they meet many foes and the people of Egypt is put in terrible danger on several occasions.

The Good: All through the 600 pages of the book, Wilbur never seems to miss the opportunity to be very descriptive. He paints the world in such a way that little is left to the imagination. The story line is intriguing, and there is a lot of action to keep you interested.

The Bad: I just don't see how Wilbur can create a character like Taita that can do everything. Doctor, Physician, Scribe, Architect, Builder, Scientist, Artist, Writer, Singer and the list goes on. In the meanwhile he is also taking care of all the Horses and building Chariots. It's just not realistic and no one has that amount of time. Not even if you don't have a TV.

That is one thing that really got to me and started to annoy me. Whenever there is something that needs to be done, Taita can do it!

I think it was a good story, but I am hoping that the next 3 books are better than this one.
